Lyrics Worth A Look – Weekly song discussion

Standard

The songs in this discussion are both old and new, are of different genres, and will appeal to some, while others not so much. I find real interest in what I call “good lyrics” in a song. I guess it’s the poetry and writing and bearing of soul that creates a song that does things to your heart and sometimes even makes your stomach do flip-flops. Each week let me know some of your favorites, and, of course, let me know what you think of mine.

Enjoy!

R.E.M. – At My Most Beautiful

(written by Buck, Peter/Stipe, Michael/Mills, Mike)

I’ve found a way to make you
I’ve found a way
A way to make you smile

I read bad poetry
Into your machine
I save your messages
Just to hear your voice.
You always listen carefully
To awkward rhymes.
You always say your name.
Like I wouldn’t know it’s you
At your most beautiful.

I’ve found a way to make you
I’ve found a way
A way to make you smile

At my most beautiful
I count your eyelashes secretly.
With every one, whisper I love you.
I let you sleep.
I know you’re closed eye watching me,
Listening.
I thought I saw a smile.

I’ve found a way to make you
I’ve found a way
A way to make you smile

It’s a beautiful song. I believe it is R.E.M. at its most beautiful! I really love the chorus. The simplicity of the words and a smile being so important to someone in this day in age is rare. The song is so dramatic in how determined someone is to make another person smile. I love that!

The part about counting eyelashes is so intriguing. I know people who’ve loved me have looked into my eyes, but has one ever attempted to count my eyelashes. How romantic!
