Egg on My Face

Standard

Egg

I was reading the egg-cyclopedia for an un-egg-spected egg-sam when an egg-cellent and egg-stravagant thing happened.  An egg-splosion of egg-normous proportions occurred so I used it as an egg-scuse to egg-splore.  I was preparing for an egg-sotic eggs-hibition on the egg-loo while performing an egg-speriment on the egg-spansion of egg-sercise.  I wanted to egg-spand my egg-straordinary and egg-stensive egg-splanation when I thought of an egg-sample.  Nothing is too egg-streme of an egg-splanation.  Remember it’s important to egg-ercise your brain and go to egg-stensive lengths to egg-spress yourself in egg-stremely egg-citing ways.  Always be egg-sact and egg-spand on egg-samples so people get egg-cited about your topic.  That way they will be sad when you egg-sit and think you’re an egg-spert on everything.  Being egg-spressive with your egg-splanation is egg-istential to being an egg-sperienced person.  It’s egg-silarating.  There will be an egg-samination later so pay egg-stra attention.  If you egg-sist for an egg-ceptional eggs-change you will feel egg-uberant and will therefore egg-sist for a purpose.

Happy Easter!

what books bind you?

Standard

I am desperately looking for a good book!  I am re-reading a book, My Name is Mary Sutter, by Robin Oliveira, because there is so little out there right now.  Is anyone else having this problem?  This book is the first of a series and I do like series.  The best book I’ve read lately and that is also a part of a series is John Sandford‘s new Prey novel, Stolen Prey.  I have read all of the Prey novels and they are wonderful!  I give them high praise.  Sandford keeps finding things to do with Lucas Davenport and even ties in his Virgil Flowers books as well.  They’re also not predictable like some I’ve encountered.  What keeps you bound to books?  What are you reading now?

Some series I like to read when they come out are as follows:

Laurell K. Hamilton‘s Anita Blake vampire hunter series – just published Kiss the Dead.  It was good, but not my favorite Anita Blake title.

Tess Gerritsen‘s Rizzoli/Isles series – John Doe, a Kindle short novel is coming out on Monday, July 23, 2012.  Last to Die is coming out in August, 2012.

Karin Slaughter‘s character Will Trent.  I love this character and the supporting characters.  Criminal came out on July 3rd and read Fallen earlier this year.  Fallen is really good.

Kay Hooper’s Noah Bishop novels – new one entitled The First Prophet coming out November 27, 2012

Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse – these have run there course I think – can’t get into the last one for some reason

Deanna Raybourn‘s Lady Julia Grey novels – unsure when new book coming out

George D. Shuman’s Sherry Moore series – unsure but eagerly awaiting new book

Kathy Reichs Tempe Brennan – new book coming out at the end of this month in paperback entitled Bones Are Forever

and

Jack Kerley‘s Carson Ryder.  Now that’s an interesting character and an ever more interesting family.  He is not even publishing in the U.S. anymore but Her Last Scream is shown on Amazon.  I am going to call the Murder By the Book dealers in Houston, TX on this one.

Are there any series you can’t wait to see?  Have you noticed the small novellas that have started coming out from various authors as e-books?  What do you think of them?  Where do you think the future of sequels lie?

See my earlier post on how to find good books at Book Bindings.

Inspiring Interiors

Standard

I grew up with the “Better Homes and Garden” concept that is “you should love the space you live in.”  “Make it your own.”  “Make your home your sanctuary”.  That is why these pics resonate with me so.  I can imagine myself with this type of interior and it really “sparks” those creative juices.

I love the colors, textures and patterns used.  I’m not great with this, but am improving.  Looking at pictures like this is key to finding your design style.

introvert intelligence

Standard

Have you ever needed a vacation after a vacation? If you have, you may be part of the 1/3 of us who are overlooked introverts. The book entitled Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking by Susan Cain is a book written for us. No longer are we looked upon as antisocial or inferior to extroverts. Some popular introvert examples are Warren Buffet, Albert Einstein, Steven Spielberg and Mahatma Gandhi. Gandhi – really? Yes – really. Introverts really can have success so it seems.

The reason why I’m writing about this is because I have over-scheduled myself and my daughter this summer. I want her to dabble in everything before Kindergarten and chances are if I “dabble” around too many people, I pay for it later by needing “down time”. A good example was this past weekend. And mind you this type of schedule seems like a “day at the park” for you extroverts. My daughter’s birthday party was Saturday and we had about 60 people give or take at a gymnastics place. Yes, it was fun, but draining for me because I love seeing all the parents, but I am worn out afterward and left with a five year old wanting more, more, more. We had a lot going on last week and on top of everything else a birthday party, meetings, Father’s Day and a Bon Voyage party was just too much.

A popular misconception about introverts is we are shy. That’s really not it, but it can be for some people. For me I prefer solitude and quiet to competing demands for my attention. I prefer solitude to interacting with people, not because I’m antisocial, but because it is more difficult for an me to process all of the information that bombards me in a group setting (i.e. a birthday party, parties in general, etc.). This has NOTHING to do with other people please understand.

We are better than extroverts at some things though. For instance, we are better at absorbing knowledge. We are not smarter, they just have stronger powers of concentration and less temptation to choose social activities over work activities and other responsibilities than do extroverts.

So let’s get this straight. I’m just now figuring this out about myself and accepting the fact I’m not some psychopath. Ten years ago I married a wonderful man with three children. Quiet was not a part of that equation. Everyone said I was nuts. Don’t get me wrong I would never go back, but it is comforting to have the knowledge that I am not crazy and this is just something about myself that I have to accept. I guess I feel more at peace with who I am and my behavior over the years. I thought I was behaving selfishly by needing this “quiet” or “down time” and I am glad to know I have not been – just the opposite – taking care of myself and who I am. Yay!

Feel free to go to Susan Cain’s site and take the Quiet Quiz. It is enlightening. This is a great book I am in the process of reading. As always, please let me know your thoughts and if you’ve read the book or plan to read the book.

Marilyn’s LIFE

Standard

I have mentioned before I own an original copy of the June 22, 1962 Life magazine which has the Marilyn “skinny dip.”  On the cover of this magazine another tag line is “Cancer May Be Infectious”.  The magazine goes on to publish a 5 page article on how cancer is or may be infectious.  If any of you would like a copy of these pages, please let me know and I can get them to you.  There are many interesting things in the magazine, but the ads are some of the most interesting.  The cigarette ads and how glamourous smoking seems and the makeup advertisements.

Since the pictures were so controversial they were neatly tucked on page 87 of 92 pages in the June, 1962 Life.  Here are actual shots of the 4 page article.

Marilyn Memories Magnified

As the 50th Anniversary of her death approaches, Marilyn Monroe is in the spotlight more than ever.  I love Marilyn and it seems there is still more to deliver.  I am loving all of these pictures.  I found this quote particularlly interesting:

A legend and Hollywood icon, Monroe wasn’t always so well known. In 1950, 20th Century Fox studios had just signed the young beauty, calling her “a hot tomato.” They offered Clark the chance to photograph her, but when he sent the shots to editors at LIFE, they were less than impressed. “Who the hell is Marilyn Monroe?” they wrote back in a telegram.

Very odd indeed is an X-ray dated Nov. 10, 1954.  This X-ray of Marilyn Monroe’s chest was obtained by a radiology resident at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.  The doctor later taught at the school and showed the X-ray to his students. Estimated value: $800 to $1,200.  Pretty ridiculous it seems.  An x-ray of her chest.  Talk about using everything for monetary gain!

Another exhibit showcasing some “never before seen” photographs will be on exhibit from May 31, 2012 – June 30, 2012.  The exhibit is entitled LAWRENCE SCHILLER – Marilyn and Me and will be on display at the Steven Kasher Gallery.  Lawrence Schiller will be there tomorrow for a public signing and opening reception for the exhibit and to sign his book Marilyn and Me which was published on May 29, 2012.  My review of the book to come.

Big Love to Listen

Buckingham Nicks 1973

Buckingham Nicks album cover 1973

I heard *Big Love and **Go Insane today. Seeing them performed reminded me of the extreme talent of Lindsey Buckingham. Such beautiful guitar playing. Did you know he didn’t have guitar lessons and doesn’t read music?  That’s amazing to me!

Below I have included the lyrics to Big Love and a link to one of the best live YouTube video of the song.

*Big Love

Looking out for love

In the night so still

Oh I’ll build you a kingdom

In that house on the hill

Looking out for love

Big, big love

You said that you love me

And that you always will

Oh, you begged me to keep ya

In that house on the hill

Looking out for love

Big, big love

(Oh, oh, oh, oh)

I wake up alone

With it all

I wake up

But only to fall

Looking out for love

Big, big love

Just looking out for love

Big, big love

[Instrumental + oh, uh, oh, uh, oh, uh, oh, uh…]

FADES OUT

*Suban theater Beverley Hills April 2011

I think we all know why he’s listed as one of the top 100 guitar players in the world.  One of the really great things about Lindsey is his passion for these songs and all the songs he does.  He puts himself into every song.  Doing that makes the song and his performances ever greater.

Rumours, Fleetwood Mac‘s most popular album (went platinum 19 times!), is written about most recently in a book entitled Making Rumours: The Inside Story of the Classic Fleetwood Mac Album, by Ken Caillat. There is a fascinating history here and I can’t wait to read this book to see what else may be revealed. I guess at this point there’s not much left, but I like reading about Fleetwood Mac anyway.

**Go Insane (See live video of Go Insane)

Two kinds of people in this world

Winners… losers

I lost my power in this world

Cause I did not use it

So I go insane

Like I always do

And I call your name

She’s a lot like you

Two kinds of trouble in this world

Living… dying

I lost my power in this world

And the rumors are flying

So I go insane

Like I always do

And I call your name

She’s a lot like you

So I go insane

Like I always do

And I call your name

She’s a lot like you

She’s a lot like you

She’s a lot like you

She’s a lot like you…

Powerful song!  What does it mean?  I think it describes how he compares all the woman who have come in and out of his life since Stevie, but they all pale in comparison.  They’re a lot like her, but still not her.  Everyone says it’s also about his old girlfriend Carol Ann Harris and he feels regret about how the relationship ended.
