The Waiting Is the Hardest Part

Standard

Waiting Marc Chagall

I love this painting – Marc Chagall‘s Waiting.  The painting is owned by the Speed Art Museum in Louisville, KY.  Several years ago my friend and I were admiring the painting and she indicated this was one of her favorites.  I have to admit at that time I didn’t have a favorite Chagall and I had never read anything about his work.  My great friend moved away and I miss having her and her observations on art.  I remembered some of the painting, but couldn’t recall the title so I emailed her and she found it!  I don’t know why, but her finding the painting and knowing the title made a big difference to me.  I think it makes me feel like my friend is closer – not all the way in Texas.  Here’s to Candyce!

For some reason my mind works in strange and mysterious ways and after she emailed me the title of the painting the song The Waiting by Tom Petty came to mind and would not leave.  I have this type of thing happen all the time.  I will be thinking about something without even knowing it and will realize a song lodged in my head and sure enough the song has something to do with some current circumstance I’m going through.

Right now I think I am in a season of waiting.  Waiting and wondering what it is I’m supposed to do.

Let’s listen to Tom Petty for a spell.  Okay – that’s better.

Now for some history on Marc Chagall and this beautifully, unusual painting:

As many of you may know, Chagall used many symbols in his paintings.  Many of his works have roosters which symbolized fertility; as many of his paintings were about or pertaining to lovers.  Marc Chagall was a Russian painter whose work stretched many different mediums.  Chagall created works in nearly every artistic medium, including painting, book illustrations, stained glass, stage sets, ceramic, tapestries and fine art prints.  Here is a list of symbols and their supposed meanings.  Take what you want from this, but it’s kind of fun to look at his paintings with the symbol meanings close at hand.

  • Cow: life par excellence – milk, meat, leather, horn, power.
  • Tree: another symbol of life.
  • Rooster: fertility, often painted together with lovers.
  • Bosom: fertility of life – Chagall had great respect for Women and it is shown in his art.
  • Fiddler: In Chagall’s village Vitebsk the fiddler made music at major events such as weddings and holidays.
  • Herring – a flying fish: Commemorates Chagall’s father who worked in a fish factory.
  • Pendulum Clock: time, and modest life.
  • Candlestick: two candles symbolize the Shabbat and the life of devout Jews.
  • Windows: Chagall’s Love of Freedom.
  • Houses of Vitebsk: Feelings for his homeland as most of these paintings were done during his years in Paris.
  • Scenes of the Circus: Creativity and Joy.
  • Horses: Freedom.
  • The Eiffel Tower: Up in the sky, another symbolic metaphor for freedom.

Candyce is still in Texas, but thanks to Chagall’s Waiting, we have been brought a little closer.  It’s true what Tom Petty says in his song, “the waiting is the hardest part.”  We will once again stroll through an art museum together, but for now we will have to be patient and use the technology at our fingertips.  We can share art online perhaps and, of course, wait.

Until next time.  Be patient and please wait.

Race Antelope Chair 1951

I am totally crushing on chairs right now. I guess it’s not a new obsession. As I survey my basement for things I’ve long misplaced, it’s chairs I need to move to get to a certain place. The old ones can be especially heavy. I’ve collected a lot of antiques over the years and the one item I can’t seem to get a hold on is chairs. There’s an Eastlake, an Eames; to me they’re all a dream. Think of all the stories they could tell if only they could talk; of times by the fire or even darning socks. Do people darn socks anymore? Anyway, chairs is the focus of this post and feel free to post a chair of your own if you dare. In a rhyming mood today I guess.

Inspiring Interiors

I grew up with the “Better Homes and Garden” concept that is “you should love the space you live in.”  “Make it your own.”  “Make your home your sanctuary”.  That is why these pics resonate with me so.  I can imagine myself with this type of interior and it really “sparks” those creative juices.

I love the colors, textures and patterns used.  I’m not great with this, but am improving.  Looking at pictures like this is key to finding your design style.

From Christian Louboutin 20th Anniversary collection

In a Q & A session Christian Louboutin was asked “How do you respond to the women who say a 5 inch platform is impossible to walk in?”

Louboutin replied, “Don’t wear my shoes to cross 25 city blocks. These heels are candy for the feet; they’re for pleasure, not practicality.” Well said Mr. Louboutin!

The red sole has always been his trademark. When asked how this occurred he explained he noticed something “off” when looking at a shoe and the black sole was distracting. He took a bottle of nail polish from his assistant who was painting her nails and started painting the bottom of the shoe. The red soles were a hit!

Goo Goo over Rzeznik

Johnny Rzeznik

Johnny Rzeznik has received 47 repins on my Pinterest “Men as Art” board, as well as 9 comments.  That’s more than my pins of Johnny DeppBon Jovi and Tom Brady combined.  What makes this guy so special?  In honor of his popularity, natural good looks and talent, I am featuring a Goo Goo Dolls song in this weeks lyric’s discussion.  Let’s look at the lyrics of one of my favorites, Iris.

*Iris by John Rzeznik

And I’d give up forever to touch you

Cuz I know that you feel me somehow

You’re the closest to heaven that I’ll ever be

And I don’t want to go home right now

And all I can taste is this moment

And all I can breathe is your life

Cuz sooner or later it’s over

I just don’t want to miss you tonight

And I don’t want the world to see me

Cuz I don’t think that they’d understand

When everything’s made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

And you can’t fight the tears that ain’t coming

Or the moment of truth in your lies

When everything feels like the movies

Yeah, you’d bleed just to know you’re alive

And I don’t want the world to see me

Cuz I don’t think that they’d understand

When everything’s made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

And I don’t want the world to see me

Cuz I don’t think that they’d understand

When everything’s made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

And I don’t want the world to see me

Cuz I don’t think that they’d understand

When everything’s made to be broken

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am

I just want you to know who I am

Johnny Rzeznik comes across as not only a great looking guy but more importantly a “good guy”.  When you read about him and his life you can’t help but agree.  I think that’s why his songs resonate the way they do.  He is “real” and he’s magnificent.

What I love about this song and it’s lyrics:

I love the lyrics in their entirety so it’s very difficult to choose favorite lyrics in this one.  If I had to choose I would say the first line of the song says it all for me and someone saying they’d “give up forever to touch you” is so beyond romantic.

*This live video was made when the Goo Goo Dolls came back home to Buffalo in 2004 for a free show with 60,000 of their closest fans.  That night Buffalo had one of the greatest downpours they’ve ever had but Johnny refused to stop playing. He said they’d play until the rain stopped and they did.  What a loyal musician to his equally loyal fans.  Impressive I think.

Stop Yucking My Yum!

Standard

Don’t rain on my parade. If I think it’s great, then you think it’s great. If I ask you for a critique and want your criticism then I’ll ask for it. Otherwise be happy and encouraging to me.

Know it alls. I cant stand them. We all know someone who takes what we say and finds some type of problem or puts a wrench in it.

I find I will tend to not tell others about things because they are the type to “yuck my yum”. I will, instead, keep things inside.

I believe that’s why Pinterest is so popular and mood boards are a great way to express yourself and plan things.

So next time someone tells you their exciting idea they totally “yum”, don’t “yuck” it up.
