Feeling a little misunderstood today so I thought I’d post some Marilyn pics.  I never tire of these.

I just read the article, A Splash of Marilyn in the June Vanity Fair.  In short, I am stunned, amazed, beyond interested and intrigued by Lawrence Schiller and his relationship with Marilyn Monroe.

I have 20+ books on Marilyn Monroe and Schiller never entered my radar as the photographer who scooped the Something’s Got To Give Life magazine “pool shots”.  He has a book coming out next month by Doubleday entitled Marilyn and Me: a Photographer’s Memories  and I am in line.  If you want to shell out a grand you can purchase Marilyn & Me:  A Memoir in Words.

The best news is I have the 1962 Life magazine with Marilyn on the cover.  It wasn’t in plastic until now.

I have always thought, as most everyone else, Marilyn was misunderstood and so tainted by her abuse she could barely function as a human being.  Being turned into a sex symbol was both something she wanted and didn’t want.  She never lost track of Norma Jean I don’t think.  I cannot say enough great things about this article.  Vanity Fair has really outdone itself this time with an exclusive on an exclusive.

I don’t want to spoil the article and I don’t think I will since it is one of the longest articles I have ever read in Vanity Fair.  One quote nearly brought me to tears.

Marilyn was talking to photographer Schiller and she said “I always have a full-length mirror next to the camera when I’m doing publicity stills.  That way I know how I look.”  Schiller asked, “So do you pose for the photographer or the mirror?”  Marilyn replied, “The mirror.  I can always find Marilyn in the mirror.”

This quote gives me chills.  I also got chills at the end of the article.  Buy this magazine or go to your local library and read the article there.   Let me know what you all think.
